My life was changed as a teenager after hearing Dr. David Vinson talk about all the graphic details of Christ’s horrific death on the cross. I couldn’t imagine ever going through anything that painful. What has recently impressed me is what went on behind the scenes at the cross. There was a spiritual battle also going on. In the spiritual realm, Christ was forsaken, judged and crushed by the Father as He bore all our sins.
Colossians 2:14,15 – Wiping out the handwriting in ordinances, which was against us, which was contrary to us; and He has taken it out of the way, nailing it to the cross. Stripping off the rulers and the authorities, He made a display of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Also present at Christ’s crucifixion were rulers and authorities which not only consisted of the chief priests and scribes but legions of fallen angels as well as satan himself. The entire universe was tuned in. They knew that Christ would enter death and Hades, a place God had never visited so they swarmed Jesus. He stripped them off just like He was taking off His jacket.
1 Peter 3:18,19 – For Christ also has suffered once for sins, the Righteous on behalf of the unrighteous, that He might bring you to God, on the one hand being put to death in the flesh, but on the other, made alive in the Spirit; In which also He went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison.
Where did Jesus go when He died? This verse indicates that He went to prison where spirits are kept. What did Jesus do while He was there? He proclaimed His triumphant victory! By conquering death and becoming the life-giving Spirit, Christ can now release us from death and enliven us. What should we do? Proclaim Christ’s victory!
Ephesians 4:8 – Therefore it is said, When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive [He led a train of vanquished foes] and He bestowed gifts on men. (AMP)
It used to be that when one army would defeat another, the victors would take captive their opponents and lead them in a triumphal procession through their city. These captives are the spoil that is referred to in Isaiah 53:12.
Therefore I will divide to Him a portion with the Great, And He will divide the spoil with the Strong; Because He poured out His life unto death And was numbered with the transgressors, Yet He alone bore the sin of many And interceded for the transgressors.
Christ has captured me by captivating me with His love that He demonstrated by dying on the cross and then overcoming death. I am proudly marching in the train of vanquished foes declaring Christ’s victory.
Thank You Lord Jesus for capturing me. You have conquered me by Your love. You have conquered satan, sin and death. You are Victor. Praise You Lord!
I enjoyed singing the chorus of this hymn all week.
Victory through Christ’s resurrection The victory is won! Praise Him for what He has done The victory is won!
