Our Christian youth camp recently watched a documentary called Privileged Planet. It was interesting to hear scientists talk about the universe and how unique the earth is. After hearing about HOW so many complex systems are held together, I was left wondering WHY.
Genesis 1:14 ESV
And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years
The moon is a very interesting celestial body with scientific and spiritual significance. Scientifically, it keeps earth’s rotation balanced. Kind of life a tail on a kite. It also matches the sun perfectly from our point of view on earth. During an eclipse, the moon completely covers the sun. Kind of like a lens cap fitting perfectly on a lens.
While scientists in the documentary agree with intelligent design, their reasoning is this: our placement in our solar system and our ecosystems with complex life forms are for making discoveries. For example, during an eclipse, astronomers are able to see further into space while the sun is covered by the moon. This is their reasoning why the sun and moon match. I would like to offer a higher reason.
Spiritually, the moon is a type of the church. Just as the moon reflects sunlight, the church reflects Christ’s light. As the world becomes more evil and dark, the church shines brighter and brighter. In fact, it is the church that is keeping the world from spiraling out of control. The vision and divine guidance we receive in the church keeps us from running wild – Proverbs 28:19. The church is also becoming the bride of Christ to match Him perfectly and be one with Him.
This was my experience these last few weeks. My wife and I drove all over the country visiting friends and family. We needed the church more than ever to keep us balanced and shining. Fortunately, we were able to meet with the church in Fort Collins, Colorado and Fairborn, Ohio. We also spent the night with a family in Omaha, Nebraska and had awesome fellowship! Our testimony is that we saw the same Christ shining in each city just as we saw the same moon in each city.
